This box was commissioned by the children of a nautical antique dealer for his 70th birthday. At the time this commission, the dealer had already commissioned me over a multi-year span to create 17 Christening boxes - one for each of his grandchildren.
His children, in appreciation for his tradition of presenting each grandchild with a Christening box, wanted to present him with a box of his own. They chose to have a nautical theme (of course!) with a stylized transom of a boat reflecting his name and the name of his wife. The "launched" date is their wedding date.
On the underside of the lid is carved the name and birthdate of each of their children in the order in which they were born and, therefore, became a "member of the crew".
The phrase carved on the front panel of the box reflects the collective gratitude of his children for the guidance they have received from their father throughout their lives.
