The bird that on the top of the box is derived from a circa 1930’s penmanship flourishing (also know as pictorial calligraphy). Surrounding the bird is an interwoven perimeter border. Both the bird and the border were chosen to symbolize the grace and femininity that the child was sure to acquire from her parents and extended family.

On one end of the box is a fouled anchor. This represents the grandfather’s nautical background as well as the various “snags”the child was bound to encounter as she went through life, keeping in mind that with the help of her parents and the rest of her extended family, she would surely be able to free herself from those snags. On the other end of the box is a compass rose also reflective of her grandparent’s nautical background. It represents the many directions available to her as she travels on her journey through life.

On the underside of the lid is carved the significant data concerning her birth.
